All About Coaching
More and more, coaching
is used by progressive organizations as well as individuals to get real
results. But what is coaching and how does it get those results?
Essentially, coaching facilitates performance by emphasizing self-awareness on the part of the client along with a "learning-by-doing-and-then-reviewing" approach. It is a unique kind of collaboration that increases clarity and learning and gets results with less effort, in less time. A basic coaching conversation can happen between co-workers, friends, or even parents and their children. Professional coaching usually includes a comprehensive assessment plus an ongoing commitment to a series of coaching sessions. This is especially true when an individual wants support during long-term projects or when significant change is involved, such as a shift in careers.
With coaching, both
the coach and the coachee are peers in the process. The coach is not an
advice-giver with all the answers, rather, coaching is a partnership in
discovery. By intensely listening, asking effective questions, and offering
sincere encouragement, the coach facilitates the process for the person
to learn his or her own answers and then to take responsibility for acting
on them. Coaching is the truest form of empowerment.
Getting Results
When a caring professional
coaches someone, several things can happen:
- Awareness increases
about objectives, current reality, and motivation.
- Responsibility
grows when the individual decides what needs to be done next and then
commits to doing it in the presence of his or her coach.
- Results that matter
naturally flow in the form of learning, performance and confidence.
